How to incorporate couponing into your already busy life

Angela over at Frugal Living NW has a great post on how to work in couponing deals into your weekly schedule.

If you feel overwhelmed with all the deals & don't know how you could make it work, see what she has to say about it. Here's an excerpt from her blog, to read the full post go here.

The most commonly asked question asked at my Strategic Couponing class is this: How do you practically plan and execute shopping trips? It’s very difficult for beginners to visualize how to do multiple transactions and how to make this work during their week. I thought it might be helpful to give you a quick glimpse at my “deal” trips this week.

Thanks, Frugal Living NW

My Rite Aid Trip

A few of this week's Rite Aid deals looked good to me, so I made a trip there this afternoon.  As you may know, hot Rite Aid deals mean stock is depleted quickly!  I try to do my Rite Aid trips as early in the week as possible.  Here's what I got today:

2 Gillette Men's Body Wash $5.98
2 John Frieda Frizz Ease Hair Spray $10
1 John Frieda Full Repair Shampoo $5
1 John Frieda Full Repair Conditioner $5
2 Rite Aid brand Cough Drops $1
Total: 26.98

Used BOGO Gillette Men's Body Wash coupon from 4/3 PG (-$2.99)
Used (4) $2/1 John Frieda product coupons from 3/6 SS (-$8)
Used $2/$10 Hair Care coupon (April Video Values) (-$2)
Used $1/1 Full Repair coupon (March Video Values - no longer available) (-$1)
Used $1 Rite Aid Wellness coupon (April Video Values) (-$1)
Total: $12.99

I paid with $12.99 in +Ups I earned last week, so $0 OOP!

In return, I received (2) $2 +Ups for buying the Gillette, $10 +Up for buying $20 in John Frieda products, and $1 +Up for buying 2 Rite Aid brand cough drops.

Total: $2.01 profit!

(In this case, having 4 copies of each coupon helped me be able to do the John Frieda deal.  Each week I buy 1 Sunday paper at the store, I have one delivered through the Oregonian subscription service, and I get the inserts from my mom and my grandma.)

I Got Paid to Shop at Walmart!

Today I went to Walmart to use my Similac coupons.  I had (5) $5/1 and (5) $3/1 coupons, so I picked up (10) 1-Qt Similac Ready-to Feed bottles.  As I was wandering around the store, I also picked up some deodorant, nail clippers and tweezers.  Here is how I broke down my 5 transactions:

Transaction #1

2 Similac $7.68
2 Revlon Nail Clippers $2.84
1 Revlon Tweezers $1.87
1 Secret Clinical Strength Deodorant (trial size) $2.47
Total: $14.86

Used $5/1 and $3/1 Similac coupons from 4/3 SS
Used (2) $2/1 Revlon Beauty Tools coupons (IP no longer available)
Used $2/1 Revlon Beauty Tool catalina that printed out at Fred Meyer
Used $3/1 Secret Clinical Strength coupon from P&G home mailer

Total: $2.14 profit (cashier paid me cash back)

Transactions #2-5

2 Similac $7.68
Used $5/1 and $3/1 Similac coupons
Total: $.32 profit for each transaction

Overall total for all 5 transactions: $3.42 profit!

I had to do separate transactions because the Similac coupons say "Limit 1 per transaction" on them.  Only one of each coupon can be used in each transaction.  The cashier let me do all 5 transactions one right after the other, so it worked out great.  It did come in handy to have a copy of Walmart's corporate coupon policy handy, because my cashier wasn't aware that it said that they would give cash back.  I politely showed it to her and she was more than happy to pay me!  In this case, it paid to shop at Walmart!

Donation Alert!

If you happened to pick up a newspaper on 4/3, you should have 2 Similac coupons from the Smart Source insert, one for $5 off and one for $3 off any Similac product.  If you use both of these at Walmart, together in the same transaction, you can get two bottles of ready-to-use formula AND Walmart will pay you $.32!  Yes, I'm totally telling the truth.  Check out my post about my Walmart shopping trip!  Here's how it breaks down:

Buy 2 Similac 1-Qt Ready-to-Feed (at my Walmart, the "Sensitive" was cheapest) $3.84 each
Use $5/1 and $3/1 coupons
Total: $.32 profit

This is one of those things that will bless a family in need in an incredible way.  The woman behind me at Walmart said, "Oh, formula is SO expensive!"  Consider using your coupons to do this deal and then donating the formula to Pregnancy Resource Center or your local food pantry.
